Using native apache with kolab

Is this really needed?  If mod-php does not provide the required functionality 
kolab falls back on huh, what is it php-imap or horde-imap (don't remember 
now).  This was discussed about 2 months ago or so, and since than I removed 
the special apache patches and kolab works quite well.
