OpenLDAP creates very high CPU load during some slapcat/ldapsearch/ldapmodify (i.e. breaks Kolab).

I have not  yet heard about this.
So this might indicate that something is not really tuned well in your 
installation.

You could try to reindex OpenLDAP's indices.
OpenLDAP's documentation should be your friend.
