Hi Simon,
Kolab contacts are not stored in LDAP. They're in annotated IMAP folders, stored as XML files attached to messages, basically. You'll need libkolabxml to interpret and write these XML objects.
The people you see in LDAP are you Kolab (IMAP) users.
