Q: Using a stock OpenLDAP install as replica?

Not at all. You use either 2.3 or 2.4. We'll  probably switch to  
OpenLDAP-2.4 with Kolab-Server-2.2.2.

I believe it is the quickest way as you do not have any hassle with  
the configuration.
