That's right, it is not Open Source but we provide the software for free.

Only partially right. A lot of them are glued to a special email server
such as Exchange, only some use standard SMTP interfaces. And to my
knowledge none of them is indepedent from the archive server and that's
the big difference.

It might be. But in this case it is important for a lot of customers to
get a good software without license costs. And I wanted to share this
information with you as kolab is an interesting project.
