Sorry, I didn't think far enough 8-)

You should be able to do something like

1 LOGIN user password
2 SETANNOTATION "INBOX/Calendar" "/vendor/kolab/folder-type" ("value.shared" 
"event")

If the server responds "OK", it supports vendor-specific annotations.
