Just enable the POP3 service, telnet to port 110 and see if you can 
authenticate there. You can also test on the IMAP port but the POP3 protocol 
should be more simple ;-)

Did you restart Evolution after changing the account. Maybe the problem is not 
the password but the (cached?) SASL information.
