definition of "strings"

Hi,

in many places of the Kolab format definition there is mentioned the 
term "string".

I would like to define "string" more precisely.

E.g.:

Does is allow for bidirectional texts?

What about special characters like the carriage return, linefeed, control 
characters like bell and quotation marks?
