Ah, great - that's the solution: I'm from Austria and my locale is 
de_AT, but it seems Horde needs de_DE. I now installed all locales  
(de_AT/de_DE/en_GB/en_US) in different encodings (UTF-8, ISO8859-1 and 
ISO8859-15) and it works now. Interestingly, it still works if I login 
in english - so the problem is gone.

Another squeeze-related issue is that the rc-script needs the following 
at the top:

Without that apt-get cannot install new packages or upgrade the system.
