??? What do you mean. OpenLDAP is nothing else but a database which offers its 
data via the LDAP protocol?

Which is not an advantage as such. Technically to me the web admin GUI shall 
also be a Kolab client.

 (This is on of the reasons why the Kolab web admin GUI always runs with the 
credentials of the connected user and NOT with some administrative user.)

Why?  IMHO this is not necessary if done correctly.

Stuart: Please comment which kind of data you intend to store in the LDAP 
directory.
