When a user is deleted, they should also be removed from distribution lists. If
they are a member of many lists, it can take a long time to discover which lists
they were members of. In the web gui, the only way to discover this is to
"modify" each list and check for an error: 

"LDAP Error searching for DN cn=User Name,dc=mydomain,dc=com: No such object"

Merely submitting the list again through the web gui removes the user properly. 

This can probably also be done using the terminal ldap* tools, but a DL
check/remove should definately be part of the user deletion process.
