Opens use tends to ship with the firewall enabled-easy to miss that dying the install. Go into YaST, and check the firewall status (note: NOT iptables!)
If not, YaST will let you check ldap server, too

Subject: Kolab 3.4 on OpenSuSE 13.1 (LDAP on IPv4?)
Hi,
I try to install Kolab 3.4 on a new OpenSuSe 13.1 installation.
I encountered a small problem with the installation itself, but that was
easy enough to solve (change vendor)
When I try to run setup-kolab however, I run into the following problem:
(like before in April 2014 with another install)
Error: failed to open an LDAP connection to host '***hostname***' port
'389' as user cn=Directory Manager'. Error: unknown.
Failed to create the configuration directory server
The LDAP server looks to be running, but only bound to ipv6. The fqdn
resolves to 192.168.1.1 obviously an IPv4 address). Could this be the issue?
See attached the full installation logs
