I have tried also today to install the latest 3.3 on a fresh install of Debian 7.5 and the database connection error is still there in roundcube.
I also tried to install 3.3 on to centos 6.5, but roundcube doesn't seem to install correctly, eg none of the background or formatting is there, but it seems to connect to the database.
