Did you try to change the last as: |(uid=%u)(mail=%u)?
I think should work. 
Notice this filter is invoked twice: when login and when using dovecot delivery 
( if you use it, for example for sieve filtering) . So you need to accomodate 
both cases and be also carefull with parameters in postfix's master.cf ( 
regarding delivery)
