dirsrv does not start

That was a good suggestion, Brian. I had switched off selinux as per the various install docs for kolab that I'd seen. Your suggestion was a good idea though, so I checked to see if it was being re-enabled behind my back. But no

sestatus

shows it is still disabled.

As I was learning about kolab I saw a number of people had problems installing kolab on CentOS. When this problem with /dev/shm permissions happens, then setup-kolab fails with a log message about dirsrv and stats, but this is a manifestation of a semaphore problem (unfortunately I don't have a copy of that error message lying around now). Somewhere on the kolab site, I saw that this problem was to do with /dev/shm, and so I compared a broken CentOS install with a working OpenSuse install and figured it was the sticky bit.

Looking back through the archives for the past few months, I see there are a number of people who IMO are suffering from this problem. Aside from this, kolab's installation is really pretty smooth.

It's possible that this CentOS anomaly only arises with an installation running inside a Xen VM.

Are you running SELinux? That can cause strange things to happen.
