imapsync very poor performance

Check your dovecot settings.
Also, the the dovecot error log.
Typical settings of a busy host:

mail_max_userip_connections = 100
login_max_processes_count = 1024
login_max_connections = 2048
In the init script use ulimit -n 4096

Then try again.
