We have, as a means of clarifying the default use of the two 
attributes:

   http://git.kolab.org/kolab-wap/tree/lib/locale/en_US.php#n251

mailAlternateAddress (in more recent versions of the Web Administration 
Panel) is now ear-marked "External Email Address(es)".
