Upgrade to 2.3.1 fails: problem unzipping patch?

I attempted to upgrade from 2.2.2 to 2.3.1 yesterday. I carefully
removed all the old packages listed in the upgrade instructions, but the
upgrade failed when installing patch. It looks as if it failed to unpack
it, and then couldn't find the files it was expecting. An attempt to
Google similar problems threw up one suggestion that it might be
connected to upgrading the OS in the mean time, but no solutions. The
base machine has been upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to 10.4 in the
intervening period. Any ideas how to get around this?
