Hm, I only found a reference to this type of error in the Gentoo  
forums  
(http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4163667.html?sid=681f75456a21f76b985fbe1ce0f25a1f).

It looked like the problems were related to "libtool". But I admit I  
don't know if you can change anything about the libtool version (or  
the gcc version) you use on your etch system.
