The other aspect is that many databases and groupware concepts
makes it hard to to an incremental backup online and keeping a consistant
state. Often the result is that you need to backup a full large binary object
with the complete dump of a consistant state.

No, but several IMAP stores, which can be distributed over several servers
(e.g. private, company, and spare time club).
