Strange.  I also followed the howto, and had absolutely *no* problems  
to install kolab on a Xeon box running Hardy 8.04.1 64-bit packages!

Exactly this works for me...

...and I also don't have it, so I assume this is just fine.

Used the source packages via wget from the ftp server - don't think it  
makes a difference.

Strange.  For me it says

checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
</snip>

The PIII is *not* 64 bit, so this might be your problem?
