Ouch!  Sorry for the noise, I should read such files better :-(

Actually, I /had/ all necessary language packs installed, but Ubuntu  
only presents the utf8 variants by default.  Running

for n in de_AT de_BE de_CH de_DE de_LU nl_BE nl_NL ; do locale-gen $n;  
done

solved it for me.
