p at rdus is proud to announce the release of Kolab-2.1 for Gentoo. This
provides the first version of a native Kolab installation on Gentoo
that deserves the attribute stable. The core packages provided
by the project are equivalent in functionality to the Kolab-2.1
release on OpenPKG. In contrast to the OpenPKG release some server
components like Postfix or Apache are provided in a newer version. In
addition the Gentoo version features some optional extensions that are
easy to install. This also includes the Horde Groupware packages.

The official site for the project documentation is now the Kolab wiki
(http://wiki.kolab.org/index.php/Gentoo).

If you desire to upgrade from the older 20060829 release then you'll
find upgrade instructions here:
http://wiki.kolab.org/index.php/Gentoo_-_SysAdmin_-_Upgrade_20060829_to_2.1

_What lies ahead?_

The overlay is planned to be kept in the current state for about a
year until there'll be the next release of stable packages. Updates
within the overlay will be concerned with bug fixes and configuration
updates. Only Horde will move at a faster pace since the current
version in the overlay cannot be considered stable yet.

Development will be continued in a branched development overlay. It
will be announced once this overlay is available.

_Comparison to the OpenPKG version_

For some users it may be of interest to get a rough overview of the
advantages and disadvantages of running Kolab natively on Gentoo
rather than on OpenPKG.

*The main disadvantage:*

 - Kolab on Gentoo is less stable since the Gentoo distribution moves
at a fast pace and the server is a very complex structure build
from more than ten different components. Keeping the configuration
and the server structures sane during version upgrades of these
components is more difficult than on OpenPKG. This will can cause
   problems from time to time.

*The main advantages:*

 - Gentoo gives you significantly more flexibility than the OpenPKG
version. Installing and integrating additional tools into your
server is less complex on Gentoo.

 - Package updates and security
fixes are in general available earlier on Gentoo since no
   additional packaging is necessary.

 - If you already know Gentoo you can use all the familiar system
administration tools to keep your system in good shape.
