Note that Horde is still experimental.

Which version of Kolab Server did you try to install an how?
Best is to start with a stable 2.0.3 release or the 2.1-beta1.

proftpd is only there 
for backwards compatibility with Outlook2000 and Kolab1 server.
It is not needed for regular Kolab2 operations.
