During the development of Kolab we used the Toltec connector.

Support for handheld devices is currently subject to the Kolab clients not the 
Kolab server. I know that the KONSEC Konnektor works well with Palm Pilot, MS 
Pocket PC and MS Mobile.

Maybe this is missleading. Where did you find it?

It is technically exatly the same as the IMAP protocol. It only means that we 
make efficient use of a client side chache.

You seemed to be a little bit confused with all this incoherent information.

Maybe it is best if you give Kolab a try and then you can study many aspects 
yourself.
