This comment is a bit late, but perhaps you've already found similar 
information in the archives about online/offline IMAP:

If you don't need offline capabilities (i.e. take your mails on a notebook 
around with you and sync from time to time), you can setup two accounts. 
The DIMAP account in KMail/Kontact uses subscription to access only the 
groupware folders. You can sync it automatically e.g. every 5 min to keep 
your addressbook and calendar up to date.
An IMAP account in KMail/Kontact can be used to show all folders which can 
be accessed like with Thunderbird or any other IMAP client. You will use 
this primarily for the correspondence. So you avoid the duplication of 
e-mail messages to your environment, while you profit from the groupware 
support.

Unfortunately you cannot select the mode per folder, this is only a long 
term goal in KMail. However, dealing with those two accounts in no problem 
because of the nice provided by the Kontact application.
