Note that most of the storage of Kolab is done within emails.
This is a major point of the design regarding backup flexibility,
robustness and scalability.

The LDAP is used to store the configuration for the servers.

It is true that Kolab's design is different from a lot of other 
groupware solutions and this makes the integration harder
at some point as Kolab is pretty new. On the other hand,
it has the potential to solve the needs coming more from a user
perspective.
