smtp smarthost

Hello,
is it possible, that the field SMTP"smarthost" is not active?
If i insert here an hostname or ip, nothing was written to the main.cf
Should postfix get this information from ldap, the assignment to ldap fails.
I wrote the host in the main.cf (relayhost) an it works fine.
