I very much assume that you hit some configuration issue.
Did you use the kolabwizard?
A short workaround is to go in the KDE Control Center and choose KDE
Resources.
There you can manually configure the resource to use to store calendar items.
(Please complain heavily if you agree with me that this dialog is nearly
unusable usability wise ;-)
Please don't hesitate to ask in case it does not work for you.

This setup should be fine for testing the calendar stuff initially.
Please note that in case you want to also test the new xml interoperability
format you must follow the instructions
