I was refering to what you have written that unknown elemements inside the
unhandled toplevel element are not preserved either.
With my limited knowledge this boils down to:

<unhandled-top-level-tag a=b>
  <unknown-element>oh
  </unknown-element>
</unhandled-top-level-tag>

read, saved and written by Kontact ->
<unhandled-top-level-tag a=b>
</unhandled-top-level-tag>

which would not count as "preserving" to me.
But I am probably missing something here...
