[Kolab-devel] PHP composer and packaging

Composer is a great tool because of its project-oriented instead of system-wide approach, this pretty much eliminates annoying dependency issues like PEAR (or PECL, or ruby-gem) introduce.

And, it could be a trade-off inbetween, where the default packages (ie for installation) could be handled through package management, while plugins/advanced additional features could be handled through composer.

The real problem for Roundcube probably is that distributions are generally too slow on updating PHP packages/libraries, even if they are stand-alone, there is no simple way to solve that, because it does make a lot of sense for a lot of other packages, but a way around it would be highly appreciated.

I for one would love the possibility of being able to install Roundcube/chwala/etc with composer and forget about the package manager altogether for these specific packages (just like i do for Drupal/phpMyAdmin/etc/etc).

Best regards,
