I figure the road to move forward is to modify the wheezy packages, so they 
depend on the proper versions of Ubuntu packages.

You'll find the wheezy packages here:

    http://git.kolabsys.com/apt/?s=idle

I don't know whether it would be best to just create branches for Ubuntu. We 
also have all the infrastructure for building and hosting the resulting 
packages available. Jeroen (in CC) can hook you up and let you know about 
where to store the modified package versions.
