FYI,

the encoding problem related to German and Greek(?) pages boiled down to the 
way it was exported, scp'ed over, and imported, and in which sequence that the 
instructions listed on

  http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Backing_up_a_wiki#Latin-1_to_UTF-8_conversion 

were executed.

Thank you for having provided that home in the past! I hope maybe you can now 
clean up the Debian Etch box it was running on, or did it have different tasks 
as well?
