The original designer of the idea was Martin Konold.
We wanted to be very scalable, robust and secure.

On the robustness side we wanted proven components,
Cyrus IMAPd was known to server hundered thousands of email folders
even around year 2000 and widely deployed. We were reusing a security model
with the IMAP ACLs. Security with general purpose databases usually is a
nightmare, so in using a special purposes database we are faster and more
secure.
