You are right in that it is a problem, especially for older Kolab Servers.
Usually the web-admin should be used to indicate the version.
We should enter the information here:
http://wiki.kolab.org/index.php/Problem_reporting#Reporting_a_problem
If you do not have a running webserver,
with newer Kolab Server, this will work:
grep ^KOLAB_VERSION /kolab/install-kolab.sh
KOLAB_VERSION="2.2-beta2"
So I would say, the problem is fixed for upcoming versions.
