You don't need to. They do it for you, if it is easy enough to do.

How do you think all 5000 other projects shipped with a reasonable distro stay 
in sync with each other? The package maintainers do it. We had some minor 
issues with Kolab and OpenLDAP 2.3 ... but I think they were much less work 
than getting around the OpenPKG stuff.

But, in most cases, not on the same machine.

kdepim isn't the only client. But, I don't see you saying toltec must be 
packaged in sync with the Kolab server software on the same distro.

To what? The distro, kdepim, or Kolab?

But, you lose distribution specific tools. You lose visibility.
