The type of disk is not as imortant as the storage configuration i,e the RAID 
level used, under no circomstances would I run a large Kolab install on a 
RAID5 setup, rather use RAID 10 if you can afford it or some sort of 
mirroring if you can't

and yes we use external RAID cards with several channels and large caches to 
improve the writing on our larger installations.
