As I've checked both of them Horde and Kontact store Contacts as kolab.xml 
attachment, even more: if I would create contact in Kontact and edit it with 
Turba I'm getting empty message, but the other way around it works fine. The 
contact created with Turba can be easily edited with Kontact and then again 
with Turba. (Checked with Horde cvs and stable  and KDE 3.5)
