It depends.

In the case of Apache, it can handle includes. So instead of modifying
the whole apache.conf, we can just create an include file. 

For the other servers, postfix, cyrus, proftpd, openldap, RedHat and
Mandrake provide working files out of the box, and don't touch them
afterwards. I don't know about the other distros though.
