Looks like you might be running into bug 1627 
(https://issues.kolab.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1627). There's also this 
thread:

If that's the case, your problem is not amavisd, but wallace. You might 
run wallace in the foreground to see if it complains about unknown utf8 
characters, to confirm that this is indeed the issue.

If it is, you might temporarily disable wallace.
