I do not have the answer to the questions you are asking but I doubt
the improvements you suggest will speed up Horde to a significant
degree.

Compared to Horde-3.1 with Kolab the newer Horde-3.2 is certainly a
thousand times faster once you start having somewhat larger IMAP
folders. The primary reason for that is the newer IMAP caching in
Horde.

Nevertheless this has only been a first step and the new structure did
not see a speed cleanup yet. There are certainly still many areas
where some simple restructuring could bring Horde/Kolab on par with
running Horde based on MySQL but currently I wouldn't expect it to be
a lightning fast web application (yet).
