Well, I can't comment on your oldie :-), but in a comparably sized setup, the 
P4 we have here for the task is basically bored most of the time. It also 
depends on the traffic you're expecting - if a lot of mail is coming in or 
going out (especially with attachments), the machine will have load peaks due 
to virus scanning and antispam measures. For that reason I agree with the 
previous poster that you should try to get at least 512MB into that box if 
possible.

Another aspect that comes to mind: If those 40 users also use kontact in 
conjunction with NFS mounted home directories, your file server might need an 
upgrade - in our experience, kontact with its DIMAP setup uses a lot of 
resources when used in such a setup, even with only a few users.
