The upcoming deprecation has been announced in December 2009.

It has been communicated repeatedly that it will be dropped after the 2.3
series, and in December 2011 it has finally been declared deprecated, with an
offer to help anyone that wants to keep this running.

Not sure I agree that a two year deprecation period qualifies as "sudden."

There are no more supported customer installations with Kolab Systems
involvement on the OpenPKG packages, so OpenPKG is a substantial cost factor
that is slowing down development for everyone, as explained in December.

If partners want to transition their installations into supported native
installations with our support, we'll gladly provide our help for that.

Naturally if companies are independently being paid to maintain OpenPKG
installations, we'll gladly hand over the OpenPKG packing stream to them so
they can continue to maintain this path for as long as they want.

And if people from the community seek to take this over, we'll gladly help
them in any way we can. So if you want to see it maintained, you're welcome to
take this over, Gunnar.

And naturally we'll continue to support the community in moving their personal
servers over to native packaging with hints and advice as and when we can.

If there are no volunteers to take this over, there may be one more release
with some security updates at some point before the 3.0 release, but that is
subject to availability of two weeks of Christoph's time, as that is the
experience of people both at Intevation and Kolab Systems as to how long such
a release takes, and that definitely woni't happen in March, I am afraid.

My apologies for any inconvenience this causes people, but I hope you will
understand that OpenPKG has been a major cost factor for a while, and with the
current constellation there is a substantial cost to every single release for
us with no income to offset the cost.

But, again: We'll gladly help those who want to make another OpenPKG release.

Best regards,
Georg
