Andreas,
thanks a lot for helping with the development of Kontact Mail.
(I prefer the name "Kontact Mail" now, because it describes the 
result after the nice long development step.)

Another option is to use packages from someone who does more quality
control on the new components. This is of course advertising
Kolab Systems' offerings for Kontact, but I also consider it a general remark. 
Often there are specialised initiatives or even professional service providers 
that will give you access to an application for your GNU/Linux Distribution
before it will be available via the distribution itself.

Even before the times of Kolab Systems this was the case for Kontact and the 
Kolab Server. If you got the stuff from the Kolab initiative, e.g. via 
kolab.org, it was much available in a production state.
