To install kolab on debian I use this method:

1) Install a minimun base system (debian stable).
2) With LVM create a partition for kolab
3) mount that partition as /data
4) ln -s /data /kolab
5) mkdir -p /kolab/RPM/SRC
6) cd /kolab/RPM/SRC
7) Download all source from Kolab repository
8) ./obmtool kolab

Doing so you have kolab in a separate partition and you have less 
problem with your debian.
