No creating an own distribution is the wrong way IMHO. If you don't like
the openpkg-solution you can try to install kolab into your "real" debian-system.
Kolab runs without problems on suse and gentoo without problems (at least it's
working for me ;) ).
I think it's possible to get it working on debian too :)
