no, it was just an example, with a typo I guess, too (should be 
dc=example,dc=com).

anyway I figured it out and described in a HOWTO on http://wpkg.org/kolab

It describes how to integrate Samba with Kolab (so that the same 
users/credentials could be used both by Samba and Kolab), and also 
describes what to change if one has a mail domain like example.com, and 
the OpenLDAP server like dc=otherexample,dc=com
