I think that Davison describes the usecase that new emails are coming in
on a regular basis and he asks for support in IMP for it.
It might not be possible or necessary to change the view, 
but the other requirements sound desireable to me:

|  checks for unread mail and bolds the folder name
|  with the number of unread messages in parentheses, shows the mail in this
|  folder as the default view when logging in, etc.
