at first glance, there are two possibilities:
a) sync directly with the server
b) sync with a client.

On a closer look, only b) remains, if you count client
software that runs on a server. :-)
Of course syncing with Kontact and Outlook probably 
are most easily reached goals.
My guess is that syncing with Outlook/Toltec already works,
somebody would need to try.

The project was for Kolab1 only. It demonstrated that writing a solution
like this can be fairly easy. Still it would be a significant effort to bring
it up to work with the Kolab2 Server and concepts.

For Sync4j I am not sure how deep we are in the Java-Trap for this one.
Has somebody tried to run this with Free Software Java implementations 
recently?

I don't know much about this one, except that the Kolab Webclient,
based on Horde is still in development and currently does not fully comply
to Kolab2 (e.g. no FB-triggering).
