| OpenLDAP 2.2.5 was a release commented "Our latest releases of OpenLDAP
| Software for general use". Doesn't sound to me being experimental.

Take that (what the development branch "sounds" like) up with the
openldap people. I tried.

2.2.x is where development is taking place, and 2.1.x is the branch
where only bugfixes are being applied. The release currently marked as
stable is 2.1.25, and that is the version that will be suggested to you
by most people on the openldap lists (unless you need one of the
specific fixes in 2.1.27 or 2.1.28, or one of the features in 2.2.x).

2.2.5 was pretty broken ... (as a trivial example, the soname is totally
broken on all 2.2.x versions prior to 2.2.7).
